Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.
– Rumi
Relationships are important!
… but what if they’re causing more disappointment than joy?
Disappointing past relationships can make you nervous about trying to create new relationships and so you stop trying and become isolated.
Or you continue having relationships, but the past is affecting the present. Being extra sensitive or hypervigilant, suspicious, easily angered, or impulsively breaking off relationships are some of the symptoms of relationship injuries. Further examples are being a people pleaser; putting the needs of others before your own, in ways that are harmful to you. In addition, people pleasers hide their true feelings and desires for fear that they will harm the relationship. But hiding who you are in your relationships creates an inauthenticity that makes true intimacy impossible.
Additionally and more importantly, the issues of the past may have hurt the relationship that you have with yourself. Instead of loving yourself and treating yourself with respect, care, and encouragement, you’re mean to yourself; you criticize yourself, make unfair demands on yourself, and neglect yourself.
Unsatisfying relationships can make you feel lonely, sad, frustrated and scared.
…but you can create a new future of happy, satisfying relationships
Whether those relationships are with yourself, your life or the people around you, therapy can help you free yourself to love fully.
and you? When will you begin that long journey into yourself?
